🍔 Learn Japanese Through Real Situations: Ordering at McDonald’s (Drive-thru & Counter)

📝 Lesson Introduction

Whether you're new to Japan or have been living here for a while, ordering food at fast-food chains like McDonald’s is a very common real-life situation.

In this lesson, we’ll practice the two most common ordering methods:

  1. Drive-thru ordering (placing your order through the intercom)

  2. Ordering at the counter and dining in

📍Part 1: Ordering via Drive-thru

🗣 Dialogue

🧑‍🍳 Staff:

いらっしゃいませ、マクドナルドへようこそ。ご注文どうぞ。

Irasshaimase, Makudonarudo e yōkoso. Go-chūmon dōzo.

→ Welcome to McDonald’s. Please go ahead with your order.


👤 Customer:

てりやきバーガーセットを一つお願いします。飲み物はコーラで。

Teriyaki bāgā setto o hitotsu onegai shimasu. Nomimono wa kōra de.

→ One Teriyaki burger set, please. Coke for the drink.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

サイズはいかがなさいますか?

Saizu wa ikaga nasaimasu ka?

→ What size would you like?


👤 Customer:

Mサイズで。

Emu saizu de.

→ Medium size, please.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

他にご注文はございますか?

Hoka ni go-chūmon wa gozaimasu ka?

→ Would you like anything else?


👤 Customer:

以上で。

Ijō de.

→ That’s all.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

ありがとうございます。お会計は700円です。2番目の窓口へお進みください。

Arigatō gozaimasu. Okaikei wa nana-hyaku en desu. Nibanme no madoguchi e o-susumi kudasai.

→ Thank you. Your total is 700 yen. Please proceed to the second window.


👤 Customer:

はい、ありがとうございます。

Hai, arigatō gozaimasu.

→ Okay, thank you.


📍Part 2: Ordering at the Counter & Dining In

🗣 Dialogue

🧑‍🍳 Staff:

いらっしゃいませ。こちらでお召し上がりですか?お持ち帰りですか?

Irasshaimase. Kochira de o-meshiagari desu ka? Omochikaeri desu ka?

→ Welcome. Will you be dining in or taking out?


👤 Customer:

ここで食べます。

Koko de tabemasu.

→ I’ll eat here.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

ご注文をどうぞ。

Go-chūmon o dōzo.

→ Please place your order.


👤 Customer:

ビッグマックセットをお願いします。飲み物はアイスコーヒーで。

Biggu makku setto o onegai shimasu. Nomimono wa aisu kōhī de.

→ One Big Mac set, please. Iced coffee for the drink.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

サイズはいかがなさいますか?

Saizu wa ikaga nasaimasu ka?

→ What size would you like?


👤 Customer:

Lサイズで。

Eru saizu de.

→ Large size, please.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

ポテトをナゲットに変更できますが、いかがですか?

Poteto o nagetto ni henkō dekimasu ga, ikaga desu ka?

→ You can switch the fries to nuggets. Would you like to do that?


👤 Customer:

じゃあ、ナゲットにしてください。

Jā, nagetto ni shite kudasai.

→ Okay, please change it to nuggets.


🧑‍🍳 Staff:

かしこまりました。お会計は850円です。番号札をお持ちください。

Kashikomarimashita. Okaikei wa happyaku gojū en desu. Bangō fuda o omochi kudasai.

→ Got it. Your total is 850 yen. Please take this number card and wait.


👤 Customer:

ありがとうございます。

Arigatō gozaimasu.

→ Thank you.


📌 Vocabulary & Key Phrases

🛵 Drive-thru

  • ご注文どうぞ (go-chūmon dōzo) → Please place your order

  • セット (setto) → Set/Combo meal

  • 飲み物 (nomimono) → Drink

  • コーラ (kōra) → Coke

  • サイズはいかがなさいますか? (saizu wa ikaga nasaimasu ka?) → What size would you like?

  • お会計は〇〇円です。 (okaikei wa ___ en desu) → Your total is ___ yen

  • 窓口 (madoguchi) → Window (for payment/pick-up)

📌 Example:

2番目の窓口へお進みください。

Nibanme no madoguchi e o-susumi kudasai.

→ Please proceed to the second window.


🍟 At the Counter – Dine In

  • お召し上がりですか? (o-meshiagari desu ka?) → Are you dining in?

  • お持ち帰りですか? (o-mochikaeri desu ka?) → Take out?

  • 飲み物は〇〇で。 (nomimono wa ___ de) → I’ll have ___ for the drink.

  • ナゲットに変更できます。 (nagetto ni henkō dekimasu) → You can change to nuggets

  • 番号札 (bangō fuda) → Number tag

  • お持ちください。 (omochi kudasai) → Please take it with you

📌 Example:

ポテトをナゲットに変更できますが、いかがですか?

Poteto o nagetto ni henkō dekimasu ga, ikaga desu ka?

→ You can change fries to nuggets. Would you like that?
