Japan Weather Guide – What to Pack for Each Season

Japan is a country with four very distinct seasons. Each season offers a completely different experience, from cherry blossoms in spring, lively summer festivals, colorful autumn foliage, to snowy winter landscapes.

One of the questions my friends often ask me is:

“What clothes should we bring when traveling to Japan?”

After living and working for several years in Tajima, Hyogo, and interacting with many travelers at the ryokan where I work, I’ve realized that packing the right clothes can make a huge difference in how comfortable your trip will be.

In this guide, I’ll share what the four seasons in Japan actually feel like, based on the real climate in Tajima (Hyogo), along with practical tips on what to pack.

Overview of Japan’s Weather

Japan has four clearly defined seasons, and winters can get quite cold with snow in many areas.

In general, the seasons in Japan feel like this:

  • 🌸 Spring – mild and comfortable
  • ☀️ Summer – hot and humid
  • 🍁 Autumn – cool and pleasant
  • ❄️ Winter – cold, sometimes snowy

However, the weather varies by region. For example:

  • Tokyo is usually warmer
  • Hokkaido is much colder
  • Tajima (Hyogo) has relatively cold winters with snow

This article uses temperature references from Tajima, where I currently live, which reflects the experience travelers often have when visiting the Kansai region and the Sea of Japan side.

Bean JP Tip

For travelers coming from warmer climates, winter in Japan can feel very different because temperatures drop quite low and snow is common.

At first, I thought wearing many thin layers or Heattech would be enough. But in reality, a proper winter jacket works much better than layering many thin clothes.

Another thing I experienced is that if you only wear regular long pants, your upper body might feel warm thanks to a thick jacket, but your legs can still feel very cold.

So besides a warm jacket, I recommend preparing thermal socks and thermal pants. Keeping your feet and legs warm makes a huge difference.

If you don’t want to bring too many clothes from home, you can also buy a winter jacket at Uniqlo after arriving in Japan.

Common Mistakes When Packing for Japan

Here are a few common mistakes I often see:

1. Underestimating summer humidity
30°C in Japan can feel much hotter due to high humidity.

2. Not bringing a jacket in spring or autumn
It may feel warm during the day but evenings can still be chilly.

3. Wearing the wrong shoes in winter
In snowy regions, shoes with good grip are very important.

Clothing by Season in Japan

One interesting thing about Japan is that clothing is very seasonal.

From my personal experience:

  • In summer, I wear shorts and short‑sleeve T‑shirts
  • During the other seasons, I almost always wear long pants and a jacket

In many warm climates, shorts and T‑shirts can be worn year‑round. But in Japan, these clothes really only work during summer.

Even in spring, wearing shorts in the early morning or evening can still feel cold.

Understanding this difference can help you pack more appropriately for your trip to Japan.
