Mandara-yu (まんだら湯) – The Spiritual Birthplace of Kinosaki Onsen
Quietly nestled at the edge of town, Mandara-yu is one of Kinosaki’s most spiritual and meaningful bathhouses. Though small in size, it holds a deep connection to the origin story of Kinosaki Onsen, where legend says the very first hot spring water appeared after a thousand days of prayer.

History & Legend
About 1,300 years ago, a monk named Dōchi Shōnin came to this area and prayed for the health and happiness of the local people. After 1,000 days of continuous prayer, hot spring water finally gushed forth from the earth — marking the beginning of Kinosaki Onsen’s long history.
The bath was named Mandara-yu, after Buddhist mandalas, symbols of harmony and enlightenment. For centuries, locals have regarded this as a sacred place of healing and rebirth.
What to Expect
Mandara-yu is smaller and quieter than most other baths, creating a soothing, meditative atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find a simple two-level bath — one deep, one shallow — allowing guests to soak at their own comfort. The outdoor bath is surrounded by natural stones and greenery, with a small red torii gate adding a spiritual touch.
The water here is said to bring renewal and peace of mind, making it ideal for those seeking a calm, reflective experience.
